Harbachs. In Amsterdam.

click the sections below for details:

Don't try to bike in Amsterdam. And don't walk in the red lanes (or you will learn some Dutch words you don't need to know).

  • WARNING: everything is in Dutch. Be prepared to use Google Translate a lot!

  • Ink Hotel: Beautifully converted old building, quirky and comfortable.

    • Has restaurant & bar (both fairly upscale)

    Google Map link

  • There are lots of breweries and beer bars, this is a good list. The first one onthe list, Brouwerij ‘t IJ, is a must-do and has a sunny, lively terrace; you will find people to chat with.

These folks do a specialty tour around beer & food, and not the big brands. and showcase smaller local businesses (food places, too). None of the links that say "buy tickets" actually work, but you can book through the calendar on this page.

    Restaurants

Cafe de Klos: they don’t take reservations, they serve mostly meat, and they have a sister bar across the street so you can make a whole evening of it.

Herring Stands:everywhere, they’re street stands offering raw herring with onion & pickle, or sandwiches (pickled herring or fried cod).

Kaasland Haarlemmerdijk: cheese lovers’ paradise. They will give samples and have cheese from everywhere. They also bake their own bread and offer sandwiches (on which you may ask for extra cheese!)

Moeders: very classic Dutch food, very made well. Cozy and if you bring a photo of your mother, they’ll put it on the wall.

FOODHALLEN: Located within a renovated tram depot, this indoor food market boasts more than 20 food stalls and offers a variety of options, ranging from gourmet signature dishes to international street foods.

If you take the Ferry to NDSM: 2 restaurants with a good assortment of food and great views of the water. Pllek is made of shipping containers while Noorderlicht is an old greenhouse.

  • Canal Cruise
Look at PureBoats or Flagship; Both companies do canal cruises; small boats, open but covered. Get great reviews and yu can pick from a wide range of times. Book ahead.

    Bloemenmarkt
The big flower market. Very fun to stroll through.

    Ferry to NDSM
Take the free ferry behind Central Station to experience this former shipyard, which is now a hub for street art, experimental culture, and the in-progress Street Art Museum. Go graffitti hunting!

This e-bike tour gets out the the countryside on a ferry and you get to see windmills and canals and farms.

    MUSEUMS DAY

    • Van Gogh Museum: You MUST book tickets in advance and DO NOT buy from anywhere except this museum website. Scams abound.

    • You will also be close to the Moco Museum, a smaller modern art museum that has works by Dali & Banksy in permanent exhibition. In a very cool old townhouse.

    • The day you're doing the Van Gogh Museum, cross the canal into the De Pijp neighborhood and wander. It's a cool place to stroll, good small shops and markets, and LOTS & LOTS of restaurants, cafes, etc.

A WORD TO THE WISE: If you need to find pot, or hash, or prostitutes, ask around. They’re easy to find.
